August 18, 2016 (Columbus) – Eight community schools across the state have been conditionally approved for $17,010,826 in grant funding for the purchase, construction, or renovation of school facilities. The Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC), which administers the program, announced the awards today. The program was created as part of the biennial budget bill passed by the General Assembly in June 2015.
The eight schools recommended to receive grants were among 13 who applied for the $25 million in potential funding. The community schools submitted grant applications that were scored by a panel and then approved by the Commission and the Ohio Department of Education (ODE). In order to qualify, schools who applied for the grant program had to qualify as a high-performing community school, as defined by the legislation and determined by ODE. According to Commission officials, the overall cost of the project may include professional design and construction fees, facility construction, fixtures, furniture, and equipment costs. In order to complete the award process, schools must execute grant agreements that are subject to approval by the state Controlling Board.

The Commission guides capital construction projects for state agencies, state-supported universities and community colleges, as well as Ohio's comprehensive public K-12 school construction and renovation program.
OFCC also manages the state's cultural facilities, school security, community school classroom facilities and lead fixture replacement grants programs.
The Commission is currently working with, or has completed all necessary work in, two-thirds of the state’s 611 school districts and has opened over 1,100 new or renovated educational facilities.
