January 26, 2017 (Columbus) – The Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) today approved nearly $184 million in state funding for school construction projects in four (4) school districts across the Buckeye state. Combined with $127 million in local funding, these projects represent more than $311 million in construction work.
"This is a critical step in ensuring that our children are in new or renovated facilities that help support academic achievement," said OFCC Executive Director David Williamson. He went on to add that, “There is also a significant economic impact attached to today’s Commission action – the construction work generated by this project could translate into both job opportunities for local residents and increased purchases of goods and services from local businesses.”
The funding awards are contingent upon State Controlling Board approval. Three (3) districts were approved for funding under the Commission’s Classroom Facilities Assistance Program (CFAP), while the fourth will participate in the Exceptional Needs Program (ENP). All four districts had previously received offers of funding from the Commission but had been unable to raise their local share during the 13 months following the original offer. Districts that fail to acquire their funding in that period are considered “lapsed” but can still participate in OSFC programs once they obtain local funding. The four districts offered funding today have raised their local shares after lapsing their earlier offers.
The Commission guides capital construction projects for state agencies, state-supported universities and community colleges, as well as Ohio's comprehensive public K-12 school construction and renovation program. OFCC also manages the state's cultural facilities, school security, community school classroom facilities and lead fixture replacement grants programs.
The Commission is currently working with, or has completed all necessary work in, two-thirds of the state’s 611 school districts and has opened over 1,140 new or renovated educational facilities.
