The Ohio Facilities Construction Commission offered grant funding to reimburse schools that purchased emergency communications systems or entrance security systems for their buildings between January 2013 and March 2017. All chartered Ohio schools - public and private - were eligible to apply for grant funding. Expenses were approved up to $2,000 for one emergency communication system per eligible school building and up to $5,000 for the purchase of an entrance security system at one main entrance per school.

School Security Grant Program

This grant program is now complete. The deadline was October 14, 2016.

HB 59 was signed by Governor John R. Kasich on June 30, 2013. One of the provisions in the bill establishes the School Security Grant Program, to be administered by the Ohio School Facilities Commission.

The School Security Grant Program authorizes the OSFC to reimburse public schools for school security expenditures including:

  • Up to $2,000 for one emergency communications system or Multi-Agency Radio Communications System (MARCS) unit per eligible school building; and
  • Up to $5,000 for costs incurred with a purchase of a security entrance system consisting of a security camera, an intercom and remote access equipment for one main entrance per eligible school building.

This program went into effect September 2013. Please note that school buildings that were approved for either grant in Round 1 may not apply for the same type of grant in Round 2.

Application Process

The Commission has created a process whereby public school districts and chartered nonpublic schools utilize a web-based tool to apply for the grant funds. Public school districts and chartered nonpublic schools receive a district (or school)-specific application link from OSFC to apply for a grant(s).
