Two OSFC projects receive stimulus funds for solar, wind power

December 3, 2009 (COLUMBUS) Two school districts with projects funded through the Ohio School Facilities Commission have received federal stimulus dollars to add wind and solar power generating technologies at their facilities.

Pettisville Local School District (Fulton County) and Parkway Local School District (Mercer County) are among 25 public and private agencies who will receive a grant from funding made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s state energy program.

“This is a tremendous opportunity,” said OSFC Executive Director Richard C. Murray. “The grants will not only provide a much needed economic boost to these communities, they offer opportunities for operational savings to the districts and educational opportunities for their students. These two school districts, who have been good partners in our construction efforts, have shown great creativity and initiative. We hope to learn from these projects and use this experience to help other schools.” Pettisville Local is currently involved in building a new $21 million facility that will house the district’s entire student population. The district was awarded $750,000 to install a 500 kilowatt wind turbine and integrate the technology as a teaching tool in the classroom.

Pettisville superintendent Steve Switzer said that the announcement means that “what was once only a dream is now just a few steps from reality.” Switzer added that the district greatly appreciated OSFC’s “ability to adapt to changing conditions and needs and their willingness to work with us in creative ways to reach our common goals.”

Parkway Local recently completed construction on a $31 million project. The district will receive $16,080 to install a solar thermal system at the school complex. Greg Puthoff, the district’s superintendent, said that they were very pleased to receive the funding because it “will enable the district to add solar energy to our school, reducing our electric and natural gas usage and lowering our costs. More importantly, it will be used in our science classes to teach solar energy technology and energy conservation.”

Established in 1997, the Commission is responsible for administration of the state’s school construction and renovation program. The Commission is currently working with, or has completed all necessary work in, nearly two-thirds of the state’s 613 school districts.

On September 10, 2012, the Commission was consolidated with the Office of the State Architect to form the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission. The Ohio School Facilities Commission continues to exist as a separate commission within the new agency, focusing on funding Ohio’s comprehensive K-12 school construction program.
